IMPHAL: The Manipur government has extended the ban on internet and data services for five more days until July 5, in an effort to prevent further disturbances to peace and public order amidst ongoing unrest in the state.
In a recent order issued by state commissioner (Home) T Ranjit Singh, it was announced that the suspension of internet services in the state will continue until 3 pm on July 5. The order stated that the ban applies to mobile data services, internet, data services through VASTs of Bharatnet Phase-II, broadband services, and internet lease line (ILL), except for those who have been specifically exempted by the government.
The extension of the ban aims to prevent any disruptions to peace and public order within Manipur’s jurisdiction. The order referenced a letter from the Director General of Police, Manipur, dated June 29, reporting ongoing incidents of violence, attacks, arson, and exchange of gunfire.
Law and Order Situation in Manipur
There is a concern that certain individuals might extensively use social media platforms to transmit images, hate speech, and inciting video messages, which could have serious repercussions on the law and order situation in Manipur. The order emphasized the imminent danger of loss of life, damage to public/private property, and disturbances to public tranquility and communal harmony due to the spread of inflammatory material and false rumors via social media, messaging services, SMS, and dongle services.
