ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday suspended a notification of the Election Commision of Pakistan (ECP) by which it had de-notified the three Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers – Asad Umar, Ali Nawaz Awan and Raja Khurram, after the speaker national assembly accepted their resignations.
The IHC also barred the ECP from conducting by-polls on these seats.
PTI’s petition in IHC
The three PTI Members of National Assembly (MNAs) from Islamabad had filed a petition in the IHC, challenging the acceptance of their resignations from the lower house. The request was filed by Barrister Ali Zafar and Barrister Gohar Ali on behalf of the three members.
In the petition, they took the stance that the ECP accepted the resignations of only some PTI lawmakers in the notification issued on January 17, 2023, whereas the resignations of all 123 PTI MNAs should have been accepted and all should have been de-seated.
