BEIRUT: Hezbollah’s second-in-command, Naim Qassem, warned Israel on Saturday that any attempt to escalate the conflict along the Lebanon border could lead to a catastrophic increase in displacement, beyond the current humanitarian crisis.

His comments follow recent statements by Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, who signaled readiness to restore security to Israel’s northern frontier amid ongoing cross-border clashes.

In a speech delivered in Beirut, Qassem addressed the potential ramifications of an all-out war, specifically targeting Israel’s strategy to return approximately 100,000 displaced persons to their homes in the border regions.

He warned that such military actions would likely displace “hundreds of thousands more” and exacerbate the humanitarian situation.

“We have no intention of going to war, as we consider that this would not be useful,” Qassem said. “However, if Israel does unleash a war, we will face up to it — and there will be large losses on both sides.”

He further cautioned that Israel should be prepared for a significantly increased number of displaced persons if they pursued such a strategy. “So take your time and think about it before reaching a decision. We are prepared for any eventuality.”

The recent tension follows Defence Minister Yoav Gallant’s comments indicating that Israel is preparing for all scenarios in the north, and his reassurance to troops about readiness for potential escalation.

Hezbollah’s ongoing conflict with Israeli forces has intensified in support of Palestinians in Gaza, who have endured relentless bombardments since October 7. The cross-border skirmishes have led to significant casualties and displacement on both sides.

According to AFP, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of 623 people in Lebanon, while Israel has reported at least 24 soldiers and 26 civilians killed. Thousands of residents in the border regions of both countries have been forced to flee their homes due to the violence.
