Federal minister asks to ensure quality education in the present ones

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Education, Rana Tanveer Hussain has asked the Higher Education Commission (HEC) not to process any new No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for universities and ensure quality education in the present ones.

In a letter written to the HEC, the minister sought strict action against all such universities running without a valid NOC from the HEC. The letter available with World Echo said that effective human development be ensured by following the quality standards envisaged by HEC.

The minister directed the HEC to take strict action against all universities and Higher Education Institutes (HEIs), which have been established without obtaining a valid NOC from the HEC.

Furthermore, the HEC has been directed to make a public announcement through print and electronic media that all such universities are not recognized by HEC. “It is further desired that HEC, as a policy matter, may not process any such NOC in the future and focus on quality improvement of current universities and HEIs,” the letter said.

The letter highlighted the role and importance of HEC in the field of education and said that 70 percent of the Pakistani population consists of youth. This young population can well contribute to the economic welfare of the country if provided adequate opportunities for learning skills and quality higher education.

“All this is possible by having a clear strategy of raising the standards and quality of our existing universities and HEIs, instead of new setups to be established at federal and provincial levels,” the letter said.
