NEW DELHI: Heavy monsoon rains claimed dozens of lives in various Indian states in the past few weeks, officials said on Wednesday.
Himachal Pradesh’s disaster management authority said in a statement on Wednesday that due to the rains in the last twenty-four hours, more than five hundred roads were blocked in different parts of the state.
It said that from June 24 to July 18, 125 people were dead, while twelve were missing. The cause of death includes landslides, flash floods, and road accidents. Indian media reported.
Himachal Pradesh recently witnessed heavy rains, bringing along flash floods and damaging property worth millions of Indian rupees.
On Wednesday, 8 people died in separate incidents in Kathua, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which recorded heavy monsoon rains.
Rains in other parts of India
Heavy rains have also disrupted daily life in the western state of Maharashtra and Gujarat,.
In Punjab, which is also hit by floods due to heavy monsoon rains, the death toll stood at thirty-five, a top official said on Wednesday.
Four more deaths in rain-related incidents were recorded in the northern state of Haryana, disrupting routine life, taking the death tally to thirty-four, authorities said.
