KINSHASA: Unidentified militants have kidnapped twenty-five young people in the northern Democratic Republic of Congo during attacks on several villages.
A local government administrator Marcellin Mazale Lekabusiya said that gunmen raided 3 villages in the Banda area, Bas-Uele province, early Tuesday morning.
Abducted youth include 7 girls
Details about the attack are not clear, but Lekabusiya said the militants kidnapped twenty-five people aged between twelve and eighteen years old. Seven of the abducted people were girls.
In a telephonic interview, the administrator also said that the attackers had released adults they had captured.
Banda lies 180 kilometers from the border with the Central African Republic, a volatile country that has been scarred by a 2013 civil war.
The rebel group Lord’s Resistance Army was once active in Bas-Uele.
