ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Tariq Bashir Cheema on Friday announced to import of 26 lac tons of wheat to counter the prevailing wheat crises in the country.
He was addressing a press conference in Islamabad. He said that the federal government has decided to import 26 lac tons of wheat. “Almost 13 lac tons of wheat has reached the country and more 4 lac tons of wheat lying on port,” he said.
He added that Pakistan will import 8 lac tons of added wheat by the 8th of March this year. “We have strategic reserves and for next season we will have 15 lac tons of wheat,” he noted.
Cheema said that Punjab daily released 21 thousand tons of wheat and two days back 26 thousand tons of wheat were released.
Government takes decision after worst wheat shortage
The government has taken this decision after the worst shortage of wheat in the country. However, it’s worth mentioning here that the food minister two weeks back while addressing a press conference denied any wheat crises in the country and insisted that the stock was enough, and blamed provinces for not releasing the wheat.
On the other hand, the flour crisis worsened in the country and the prices also touched the sky. People were seen running after the vehicles providing subsidies for flour and in an unfortunate incident, a man lost his life in a stampede caused to get flour at low prices.
