BERLIN: German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht on Monday resigned after coming in for months of heavy criticism over Berlin’s stumbling response to the war in Ukraine.
The defence minister’s decision came just days before an important meeting of defence ministers from allies of Ukraine, and as Berlin was under intense pressure to provide battle tanks to Ukraine.
Appointment of new defence minister
A spokeswoman for the Greman Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Monday he would announce the new defence minister “in the near future”; however, government sources told AFP that no decision should be expected on Monday on the appointment of the new defence minister.
In a statement, Lambrecht, 57, said she had asked Chancellor Scholz to relieve her of her duties as defence minister.
