GAZA STRIP: Efforts to reach a Gaza ceasefire deal in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian resistance group Hamas are set to resume as the US and Israeli negotiators are expected in Cairo over the weekend. The war, which has endured for nearly six months, has garnered international attention and condemnation for its devastating toll on civilians and aid workers.
Ahead of the talks, US President Joe Biden has urged leaders of Egypt and Qatar to intensify pressure on Hamas to agree to and adhere to a ceasefire and hostage exchange deal. The involvement of the United States, Qatar, and Egypt in facilitating negotiations underscores the urgency to bring an end to the prolonged conflict.
While negotiations have been ongoing for months, little progress has been made since a week-long truce in November. Both sides have traded blame for the stalemate, with the Biden administration emphasizing the need for Hamas to release hostages.
The war in Gaza has exacted a heavy toll on Palestinian civilians, aid workers, and journalists, with more than 33,000 people, mostly women and children, reported killed according to the health ministry. Amid mounting international pressure, President Biden has warned of a potential reassessment of US support if further measures are not taken to protect civilians.
In response to recent events, including the killing of seven aid workers by Israeli drone strikes, calls for accountability have intensified. The Israeli army’s acknowledgment of “grave mistakes” leading to the tragic incident has prompted criticism, with demands for a thorough investigation and accountability.
