ISLAMABAD: Several former Pakistani cricketers have voiced strong criticism in response to recent remarks made by Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar regarding Pakistan’s potential absence from the Asia Cup 2025.
Prominent figures such as Javed Miandad, Iqbal Qasim, and Basit Ali all expressed disappointment over Gavaskar’s statements.
During a recent interview with an Indian news channel, Gavaskar cast doubt over Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming Asia Cup, which is set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in September.
He suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) typically follows directives from the Indian government, implying that ongoing political tensions might prevent Pakistan from featuring in the tournament.
“The BCCI has always acted in line with the Indian government’s stance. If there’s no change in the current situation, I can’t see Pakistan taking part in the Asia Cup,” Gavaskar stated.
He also speculated on the future of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), suggesting it might be disbanded and replaced by a smaller tri-nation or quadrangular series.
Pakistani players reactions
These comments drew strong reactions from former Pakistani players. Javed Miandad expressed disbelief, saying:
“I’m shocked, Sunny bhai said that. He’s always been someone who kept away from politics and maintained respect.”
Former left-arm spinner Iqbal Qasim echoed Miandad’s sentiments and even questioned whether Gavaskar had been quoted accurately.
“Gavaskar is respected on both sides of the border. Politics should not be brought into the sport,” Qasim said.
Basit Ali responded more forcefully, describing the remarks as “foolish” and warning against making unverified claims.
“Let the facts be known first. Cricket must rise above political issues,” Basit asserted.
It is worth mentioning that the Asia Cup 2025, the 17th edition of the tournament, is scheduled for September. The event will feature eight teams: the five full ACC members — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka — alongside Hong Kong, Oman, and the UAE, who qualified through the 2024 ACC Men’s Premier Cup.
