DUBAI: A massive fire that started on Monday in fuel tanks on the Iranian side of the Iran-Afghan Dogharoun Special Economic Zone at the border has been extinguished, Iran’s state media reported.
“The fire injured four people up to now and has been put out. The cause of the incident is still being investigated”, state media said.
The state media said the fire caused partial damage to the fuel storage infrastructure. According to media reports citing Taliban border officials, the fire engulfed 500 fuel tankers. Exact figures on casualties and financial losses have not yet been confirmed.
Jilani Farhad, a former spokesperson for the governor of Herat province, told IRNA that the fire had been extinguished. Preliminary estimates show that the fire caused approximately $50 million in damages, though a thorough evaluation is still pending.
Mohammad Reza Rezaei, the deputy political, security, and social affairs governor of Taybad, stated, “The extensive fire caused by fuel tankers in the Dogharoun Special Economic Zone has halted the movement of transport fleets and led to the closure of the customs, border market, and all activities at this border.”
