ISLAMABAD: Despite recent strains, Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Paris to celebrate six decades of post-war cooperation, with Scholz and France’s President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday pledging to drive Europe forward together.
Russia’s special operation in Ukraine and broader shifts in geopolitics have put the two countries’ historic partnership under pressure.
Speaking at the French capital’s Sorbonne University, Scholz said maintaining robust ties was key for the continent.
He said that in the future, as in the past, for a united Europe cooperation between the two countries would be the driving force.
On the occasion, Macron stated that as Germany and France cleared the path to reconciliation, the two countries must relaunch Europe by becoming pioneers.
Stress made on need to drive Europe forward together
The French president further said that there was a need to encourage tomorrow’s innovation and technologies, formulate a new energy model and ensure that, in its own right, the EU becomes a geopolitical power with respect to space, diplomacy, and defence.
