PARIS: French health authorities have confirmed the country’s first recorded case of Ebola virus disease, involving a doctor who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, France’s health ministry said a positive case of Ebola had been identified on French territory, marking the first confirmed detection of the highly infectious disease in the country.

Officials later clarified that the case was recorded in mainland France and involved a medical professional who had recently travelled from the DRC, where outbreaks of Ebola have periodically occurred.

Health authorities have initiated standard containment and monitoring procedures, including contact tracing and medical surveillance of individuals who may have been exposed to the patient. The infected doctor is receiving appropriate medical care under strict isolation protocols.

The ministry sought to reassure the public that established public health measures are in place to limit any risk of further transmission and that the situation is being closely monitored.

Ebola is a severe viral illness that spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated materials. Symptoms typically include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, vomiting and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.

France has previously dealt with suspected Ebola cases linked to international travel, but no confirmed infection had been recorded within the country until now. Authorities said further updates would be provided as investigations continue and additional epidemiological assessments are completed.
