ROME/ATHENS: Four people were killed and 11 others injured when an Italian military helicopter serving with the European Union’s peacekeeping mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina crashed on Thursday, Italy’s Defence Ministry said.

Two of those killed were members of the Italian Army, while the other two belonged to the Italian Red Cross’s Volunteer Military Corps.

The helicopter, carrying 15 people, crashed in the village of Gorice in the Brcko District. All 11 injured were receiving medical treatment, with none reported to be in a life-threatening condition, the ministry said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, with authorities seeking to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The aircraft was deployed as part of Operation Althea, the European Union Force (EUFOR) mission tasked with overseeing the implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement, which ended the war in Bosnia in 1995.

Images broadcast by local media showed the military transport helicopter overturned on the ground and broken into pieces.
