ISLAMABAD: Opinion polls in the Czech Republic have revealed that a former general, who is calling for unhindered support for Ukraine, is likely to win against a billionaire ex-president in the country’s presidential election’s run-off to be held on January27-28.
In the first round of voting, former NATO military official Petr Pavel had emerged ahead of ex-PM and business magnate Anderj Babis by a razor-thin margin. Babis is the leader of the strongest opposition party.
Czech presidential run-off vote pits Pavel against Babis
On Sunday CNN Prima News published a STEM opinion poll that was undertaken earlier in the week and had shown Pavel at 57.6% while Babis at 42.4%. In another poll carried out by Kantar for public TV had Pavel ahead with 53% and Babis trailing at 38%.
The winner of the vote next weekend will become only the four heads of state in the Central European country after the fall of communism.
Pavel, who is running as an independent candidate, has to be more accommodating than outgoing President Milos Zeman. than Zeman. After the first round, Pavel won the backing of several of the presidential candidates who together received more than 20% of the vote. Pavel has promised to promote same-sex marriage along with other LGBTQ issues.
Babis is seeking to retake a high-position office after his defeat in the 2021 parliamentary polls. He has been at odds with the European Union over policies on migration. His campaign is centered on him becoming a force to balance out the center-right coalition of PM Petr Fiala.
