FAIZABAD: A former Afghan intelligence official has died after being targeted in an armed attack in Faizabad, the capital of Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, local sources said.
Abdul Jamil Joya, the former deputy head of analysis at Badakhshan’s National Directorate of Security, was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt on Monday. He was later transferred in critical condition to a hospital in Kunduz, where he died on Tuesday night.
According to sources, Joya was hit by three bullets, including two to the head and one to the leg. He was buried on Thursday in Faizabad, where images showed a large crowd attending his funeral.
Sources said Joya had been running a private business in Faizabad since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan.
No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and Taliban authorities have not commented on the incident.
The killing comes amid continued reports of violence, arbitrary arrests and mistreatment targeting former members of Afghanistan’s previous government and security forces.
In a recent report, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres confirmed that such incidents were continuing in Afghanistan.
The report said the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan documented at least five killings, 20 cases of arbitrary arrest and detention, and eight cases of torture and ill-treatment involving former government employees and security personnel between January 26 and March 31.
