FLORIDA, USA: Cities along the East Coast in the US are on high alert as a formidable storm system, unleashing torrential rain, high winds, and severe thunderstorms, continues its destructive path.

Having battered Florida and South Carolina over the weekend, the aftermath is anticipated to persist through Monday.

The National Weather Service Tampa Bay reported coastal flooding in the Tampa Bay area on Saturday, leaving more than 33,000 customers in Florida without power by noon on Sunday. Fortunately, power restoration efforts by Florida Power & Light Co. have been underway, urging caution around downed power lines and standing water.

South Carolina is grappling with power outages affecting over 8,000 customers. Santee Cooper, the state’s major power provider, is diligently working on restoring services amid the challenging conditions.

The lower South Carolina coast, including downtown Charleston, faces dangerous flooding, prompting flash flood and coastal flood warnings. Charleston Harbor witnesses record-breaking tide levels unrelated to a tropical system, heightening concerns.

Myrtle Beach and Cherry Grove in South Carolina depict scenes of street flooding and formidable winds in shared videos. Storm chaser Andrew Elswick reported intense winds shaking his vehicle, emphasizing the severity of the weather conditions.

In New York City, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is gearing up for heavy rain and high wind gusts, with preparations for potential tree removal across train tracks. A ban on empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks on bridges and in tunnels is in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday to 2 p.m. Monday.

Mayor Eric Adams issued a travel advisory for Sunday and Monday, cautioning residents about likely coastal flooding, reaching up to 1 or 2 feet by Sunday night. Residents are urged to stay vigilant, secure loose items, and take extra precautions in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

Parts of Maine are bracing for heavy rain, with the National Weather Service predicting “significant rainfall” Sunday night into Monday across mountains and foothills. Rising river levels are expected, compounded by potentially damaging winds on Monday. Coastal flooding during high tide and additional flooding in inland areas from rainfall and snowmelt add to the concerns.

As the storm’s impact unfolds, residents are advised to stay informed, heed warnings, and prioritize safety during this challenging weather event.
