FIFA Grants Approval for Indigenous Flags at Women’s World Cup

MELBOURNE: The international governing body for football, FIFA, has agreed to the requests made by Australia and New Zealand to display Indigenous flags at the upcoming Women’s World Cup. In an announcement on Friday, the co-hosts confirmed that the Australian Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag would be showcased at all 35 matches in Australia, while New Zealand would feature the Māori flag, known as ‘Tino Rangatiratanga,’ at all 29 matches.

Football Australia boss James Johnson expressed the significance of this decision by FIFA, stating that it marked an important moment for all Australians, especially the First Nations People. The inclusion of the Indigenous flags in the tournament represents a recognition and celebration of the rich culture and heritage of these nations.
