ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s out-of-favour opener Fakhar Zaman is knocking on the selectors’ doors with a sublime run of form, having struck four centuries and four fifties in his last 10 appearances across formats.
The 36-year-old left-hander continued his remarkable resurgence in the President’s Trophy Grade-I for Khan Research Laboratories (KRL), scoring 128 and 77 in his two innings to underline his credentials for a national comeback.

Fakhar’s purple patch began towards the end of the Pakistan Super League, where he smashed three fifties and a century in his final four matches for Lahore Qalandars. His scores were 84, 103, 61 and an unbeaten 58.
He then carried the momentum into the National Champions Cup in August, amassing 269 runs in three matches, including two centuries, and was named Player of the Series for his outstanding performances.

His rich vein of form has continued in red-ball cricket. In the opening President’s Trophy match, Fakhar accumulated 205 runs across two innings, further strengthening his case ahead of Pakistan’s upcoming white-ball assignments.
Fakhar has been out of Pakistan’s white-ball setup for several months. His last international appearance came at the T20 World Cup in February, where he featured in only three matches as Pakistan failed to reach the semi-finals.

Fitness concerns subsequently kept him out of the ODI series against Bangladesh and the T20I and ODI series against Australia in May and June. After regaining full fitness, however, Fakhar has returned to domestic cricket in impressive fashion.

With Pakistan facing a selection dilemma and the ODI World Cup scheduled for next year, Fakhar’s sustained run of form could force the selectors to reconsider the experienced opener, particularly if he maintains his consistency in domestic cricket.
