Key Points:
- Public Google Drive folder raises serious authenticity concerns.
- Users urged to verify sources before clicking or forwarding.
ISLAMABAD: A Google Drive link circulating widely across WhatsApp groups, accompanied by military-themed imagery, has been denied by military sources, who clarified that they have no connection with the content.
The message, marked as “Forwarded many times,” claims to provide access to “Bunyan um Marsoos Billboards” through a publicly accessible Google Drive folder. It is accompanied by promotional-style visuals featuring military aircraft, naval assets, soldiers, and civilians holding Pakistani flags — giving the impression of an official campaign linked to national institutions.
Digital security experts note multiple red flags that point to the link’s lack of authenticity. The content is not shared via any verified channels, such as its official website or social media accounts, but is instead being forwarded through private WhatsApp groups.
The “forwarded many times” label suggests the message has spread rapidly without verification — a pattern commonly associated with disinformation. Additionally, experts highlight that official institutions rarely distribute branded or sensitive material through generic public Google Drive folders without formal announcements.
Cyber risk warning
Cybersecurity analysts warn that such links can pose serious risks. Clicking on unverified Google Drive URLs may expose users to phishing attempts aimed at stealing personal data, malware embedded in downloadable files, or unauthorised access to Google accounts.
While the exact intent behind this specific link remains unclear, experts say such tactics often exploit public trust in institutions to maximise reach and engagement.
