BRUSSELS: The European Union (EU) said it was “appalled” after Iran on Saturday executed two men for killing a paramilitary force soldier during nationwide protests triggered by the custodial death of a young Kurdish-Iranian woman.
“The EU is dismayed by the execution of Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini and Mohammad Mehdi Karami arrested and sentenced to death in connection with the ongoing protest demonstrations in Iran,” the spokesman for EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said in a statement.
He said the latest execution is yet another sign of the Iranian authorities’ violent repression of civilian protest demonstrations.
European Union asks Iran to end condemnable practice
The spokesman said the European Union once again calls on the Iranian authorities to immediately end the strongly condemnable practice of imposing and carrying out the execution of protesters.”
The EU statement came after Iran executed two more men over the countrywide protests, which escalated since mid-September into calls for an end to the clerical regime in Iran.
Two men were sentenced to death in December, sparking global outrage and new Western sanctions against Iran.
Iranian authorities have arrested thousands of people in connection with protest demonstrations that began with the September custodial death of Mahsa Amini, 22.
Iran’s morality police arrested the Iranian Kurdish woman for allegedly breaching the regime’s strict dress code for women.
