ISLAMABAD: Amid Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the European Commission’s Internal Market Commissioner has disclosed the body’s plan to present a strategy to boost the European Union’s defense and security efforts in space.
Following the start of the Ukrainian conflict, Europe and Russia have ended their formerly close tie-up in space. As a result, numerous missions have been delayed while European efforts regarding the launch of satellites have been affected.
At the opening of the European Space Conference in Brussels, Breton stated that in light of the present geopolitical situation, we need to solidify the EU’s long-term strategic posture that would be able to protect our interests, protect space services and systems along with becoming a space power that is more assertive.
EU needs a space defense strategic plan
At the conference, foreign policy chief of the EU Josep Borell said that Russia’s assault on Ukraine was a wake-up call. In light of this for common action by Europe, the bloc needs to optimize space services and assets.
Breton added that out of EU’s 27 member states, 10 had already begun to regulate their space operations.
He stressed the risk of EU member states having divergent national rules that could negatively affect industry, security, and competitiveness.
