BRUSSELS: European Commission (EU) President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday welcomed the agreement reached between the United States and Iran, saying it should pave the way for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and help ease tensions across the Middle East.
Speaking after the announcement of the deal, von der Leyen stressed that the accord must be implemented swiftly and fully by all sides to ensure lasting stability. “The priority now is its swift and full implementation by all parties,” she said.

The European Commission chief emphasised that freedom of navigation through the strategically important waterway must be restored without delay and without additional costs, describing it as crucial for both regional security and the global economy.
According to von der Leyen, reopening the Strait of Hormuz could also create momentum for broader diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving peace and strengthening security across the Middle East. She further warned that lasting peace in the region would remain elusive as long as violence continued in Lebanon.
Reiterating the European Union’s position, von der Leyen called on all parties involved to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and to work towards the implementation of a genuine ceasefire.
Her remarks came as international leaders continued to react to the US-Iran agreement, which has raised hopes of de-escalation following weeks of heightened tensions in the region.
