ISLAMABAD: Farzana Altaf Shah, Director General Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA), said on Friday that the existing environmental laws required serious efforts to be modified in reference to green building for environment-friendly urban development.
She said that development of structures and infrastructure through sustainable materials and technology is the cornerstone of eco-friendly building. A sustainable or green building is one that may raise or preserve the living standard in the area in which it is located.
Speaking at the webinar organized by the Institute of Urbanism (IoU), Shah said with regard to the building bylaws and green infrastructure in Islamabad, a serious effort was needed to comprehend the green building concept.
Shah said that it should be determined whether buildings should be in a certain location before discussing the codes of construction.
Environmental laws’ importance stressed
While underlining the importance of environmental laws, she said that the green construction was not only about installing solar panels on the roofs, but it begins with the building’s base and continued throughout its whole life.
