LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Pervaiz Elahi has warned that the government’s refusal to release election funds to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will be tantamount to contempt of court.

Elahi criticized Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, saying he has chosen a path of rebellion against the Constitution and that ‘God Father’ is giving instructions to the government from London.

Elahi’s statement came after the coalition government demanded the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) step down from his post after the verdict nullifying the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) order to postpone the Punjab Assembly elections.

Elahi further criticized those who are celebrating the golden jubilee of the Constitution yet committing constitutional violations. He demanded that if the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) claims to respect the Constitution, it should thwart any attempt to violate it.

“The nation stands with the chief justice for the supremacy of the Constitution, and Nawaz Sharif’s desire to degrade the judiciary will never be fulfilled,” he added.

Elahi stressed that the Parliament could not refuse the disbursement of funds to the ECP for the Punjab elections. Refusing to disburse funds to the ECP, he said, would be tantamount to contempt of court.

Elahi demands PM Shehbaz’s resignation

Elahi also demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif “for violating the Constitution,” stating that Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan cannot go together further, as the economy is completely destroyed, and the incumbent government has lost its reputation before global institutions.

He stated that the inflation rate has risen to a record high of 35%, and 1 million youth left the country within one year, while nationals are losing their lives in queues for flour. He accused the incumbent government of delivering nothing to the nation except inflation, chaos, and disappointment.

The statement from the PTI president highlights the ongoing political turmoil in Pakistan, with tensions escalating between the government and opposition parties, as well as the judiciary. It also underscores the significance of upholding the Constitution and the rule of law in the country.
