Egypt, Yemen Presidents Discuss Red Sea Security

MANAMA: The presidents of Yemen and Egypt have held talks regarding the ways to secure shipping lanes in the Red Sea, Arab media reported on Friday.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad Al-Alimi met on the sidelines of the Arab League Summit in Bahrain, local media reported. El-Sisi and Al-Alimi emphasized the significance of security in the Red Sea for the stability of the region.

Since November, the Houthis have launched hundreds of ballistic drones and missiles at international commercial and naval vessels in the Red Sea. the Houthis have reportedly been acting in solidarity with Palestinians and want Israel to stop its war against Gazans.

During the talks, President El-Sisi has emphasized Egypt’s commitment to Yemen’s stability and unity, and said that Cairo would continue seeking a political settlement to the crisis in that country.

Al-Alimi has thanked Egypt for its efforts to ease suffering in Yemen and for seeking to ensure the region’s stability.
