CAIRO: Egypt’s elections authority has announced that the country will hold its presidential vote from December 10 to 12. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is widely anticipated to seek and win reelection, despite facing significant economic challenges such as soaring inflation and persistent foreign currency shortages.
At 68 years of age, President El-Sisi is eligible to run for a third term, thanks to constitutional amendments enacted in 2019. These amendments also extended the length of presidential terms from four to six years, potentially allowing him to remain in office until at least 2030.
The election results are scheduled to be officially declared on December 23. In the event of a runoff round, final results should be announced no later than January 16, as stated by the election authority.
President El-Sisi’s decision to seek reelection comes amid efforts to address Egypt’s economic crisis and other domestic challenges. His leadership will face scrutiny as the country navigates these complex issues in the coming years.
