BURUNDI: Leaders of East Africa have called for an immediate ceasefire in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, media reported on Saturday. They made the demand in a summit that was convened in order to find ways of calming the intense conflict.

The negotiations were hosted in Burundi by East Africa Community, which is also leading mediation efforts to resolve the crisis in the central African nation.
A rebel group known as the M23 has taken strips of land in the east part of the country and fighting is taking place despite a peace roadmap devised in the Angolan capital in last year and the deployment of East African Countries force in November.

The heads of African nations called for an “immediate ceasefire” and the withdrawal of all armed parties after the summit. They also issued directives to army chiefs to hold a meeting within a week to set timelines for the withdrawal. They highlighted the need for enhanced talks among all the groups.
