ISLAMABAD: Walt Disney is planning to cut as many as 1,000 jobs as part of a new restructuring initiative, with most of the reductions expected to affect its marketing operations, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The report, citing people familiar with the matter, said the planned layoffs are part of an ongoing effort to reduce costs and streamline operations across the company’s global business.

Disney, one of the world’s largest entertainment conglomerates, has been adjusting its organisational structure in response to changing dynamics in the media industry, particularly the shift toward streaming platforms and evolving consumer behaviour.

According to the WSJ report, “many of the cuts will be made in the company’s marketing department,” as part of internal discussions aimed at improving efficiency and reallocating resources across key business segments.

The report added that the job cuts are expected to affect less than 1% of Disney’s global workforce, which numbered about 231,000 employees at the end of fiscal 2025.

The company has not officially confirmed the layoffs and has not issued a formal public statement on the reported restructuring plan.

Analysts note that major media companies have been under pressure to control costs following heavy investment cycles in streaming services, alongside slower-than-expected returns and intensifying competition in the digital entertainment space.

The reported restructuring also comes as global media firms continue to reassess advertising revenues and content spending strategies in a rapidly changing market environment.
