ISLAMABAD: New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell became the fastest Kiwi batter to reach 2,000 runs in One Day Internationals on Saturday at Mount Maunganui, surpassing a long-standing national record and joining the ranks of the top ten fastest players to achieve the milestone in ODI history.
The 18th over saw the introduction of Mitchell, who entered the fray after Nicholls was dismissed by Akif Javed.
Despite a cautious start, marked by seven consecutive dot balls, Mitchell quickly found his rhythm, scoring two singles that propelled him past the milestone of 2,000 ODI runs.
He ultimately finished with a commendable 43 runs off 53 balls before falling to Javed once more.
Achieving this remarkable feat in just 47 innings, Daryl Mitchell broke the previous New Zealand record held by Andrew Jones, who reached the landmark in 52 innings back in February 1991.
This accomplishment also places Mitchell among the elite, ranking as the joint-eighth fastest in ODI history. The overall record remains with India’s Shubman Gill, who sprinted to 2,000 runs in a mere 38 innings.
