HAVANA: People expressed dismay over the shortage of food in Cuba and termed it a miserable situation for many especially for women. Diana Ruiz told AFP a dilemma faced by parents especially mothers across an island hit by food shortages. She said that they have not enough food to feed her family.
AFP reported that a demand over food shortages led hundreds of people to stage protest demonstrations in at least four cities on March 17, the massive protest demonstration since historic anti-government protests on July 11, 2021.

The demonstrations erupted first in Santiago de Cuba and many of the protester demonstrators were women. Days later, President Miguel Diaz-Canel attributed the political unrest to a gathering of long shutdowns that seriously annoy the people. He said that the food shortages were due to breaks in the timely distribution of the basic food items.
However, a human rights group reported this week 17 people were arrested due to the protests, while another group said that it has documented the arrest of 38 people, six of whom were freed.
