LISBON, Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo said he remains focused on the present and is not setting a date for his international retirement as questions continue over the next stage of his football career.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain addressed reporters on Wednesday ahead of the Nations League match against Wales, following earlier comments that the current season would “probably” be the final chapter of his playing career.
“I’m no longer at an age where I think about the future,” Ronaldo said. “For me, the present is what matters most.”
Ronaldo leaves retirement decision open
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he would be ready to step away from international football whenever Portugal’s coaching staff decide the time is right.
Ronaldo suggested that he would announce his departure before playing his final match for the national team, but did not provide a specific timeline.

The forward also spoke about his ambition to reach 1,000 career goals. He has already scored 979 goals across club and international competitions.
“I’ve already said that I want to get there and I will get there, but it’s not an obsession,” Ronaldo said.
He added that scoring his 1,000th goal while representing Portugal would be a special achievement.
New era under Jorge Jesus
Ronaldo also welcomed the appointment of new Portugal coach Jorge Jesus, describing his arrival as the start of a new era for the national team.
The forward previously worked with Jesus at Saudi club Al-Nassr and said the experienced coach was the right choice to lead Portugal.
Portugal, winners of the Nations League in 2019 and 2025, will begin their latest campaign against Wales in Lisbon before facing Norway and Denmark in upcoming fixtures.
Jesus confirmed that Ronaldo will captain and play in the match against Wales, expressing hope that the veteran forward can continue contributing to the team.
