ISLAMABAD: Nanjing University of Information Sciences and Technology (NUIST) offers fully-funded Climate Change and Environmental Governance scholarships to assist Pakistani students in developing their research capacity to address climate catastrophe.

Professor Dr. Tong Jiang of NUIST, the research institute’s executive director, confirmed the report and said on Monday that his school is providing fully funded Climate Change and Environmental Governance scholarships for Pakistani students.

NUIST and NUST have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote collaboration in scientific research and student and teacher exchanges. According to Professor Jiang, the research collaboration is also being increased with other renowned universities in Pakistan, such as Quaid-e-Azam University, COMSATS University Islamabad, and the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

He also said that the university would admit young researchers studying climate change and climate risk from universities in Pakistan. Environmental Change, too. Additionally, postdoctoral opportunities would be available.

He declared, “Water scarcity and climate change tipping points are the main topics of our new project in Pakistan. Due to severe flooding the previous year, Pakistan is experiencing high temperatures and drought. There is a growing water deficit in Pakistan, and water is also being drained, claims a UN assessment. It is most likely due to problems with the water management system and the growing population.

Professor Jiang continued that water is a crucial component as Pakistan’s economic system is primarily centered on agriculture. Our research will therefore concentrate on mitigating this climate change effect and easing the water deficit. According to him, the main contributors to poor air quality are industrial emissions, vehicle emissions, residential emissions, construction-related dust emissions, brick kiln smoke, and soot from burning agricultural waste.

He suggested moving industry out of urban centers and into rural regions, switching to renewable energy, using more accessible public transportation, planting trees, and managing livestock and trash from urban areas better as answers.
