BEIJING: China has expressed full support for Pakistan’s efforts to mediate between the United States and Iran, calling on both sides to begin peace talks “as soon as possible,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Monday.

“We appreciate Pakistan’s efforts to help de-escalate the situation and support Pakistan in continuing to play a mediating role,” spokeswoman Mao told a daily briefing in Beijing.

She added that China is ready to coordinate with Pakistan and other relevant parties “to jointly promote peace and cease hostilities to safeguard regional peace and stability.”

Mao emphasised that military action will not resolve the conflict. “Military means will not solve the root cause. The conflict serves no one’s interests,” she said.

Pakistan steps up mediation

Pakistan has moved a step closer to hosting high-stakes talks between Iran and the US.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday said that Tehran and Washington have expressed confidence in Islamabad’s role as a facilitator.

The announcement followed a high-level quadrilateral meeting in Islamabad involving the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt, who discussed ways to de-escalate the conflict.

Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said both the US and Iran have expressed confidence in Islamabad’s role as a facilitator.

“Pakistan would be honoured to host meaningful talks between the two sides in the coming days,” Dar told reporters.

Wider global support for Pakistan’s mediation efforts

Dar highlighted strong international support for Pakistan’s mediation efforts.

“I had a detailed telephonic conversation with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. China fully supports Pakistan’s initiative to host Iran-US talks,” he said.

He also said that the United Nations Secretary-General has backed Pakistan’s initiative for regional peace.

The quadrilateral meeting in Islamabad was the second consultation this month, following an earlier round in Riyadh.

Dar described the outcome as producing “unified regional backing for Pakistan’s mediation effort.”

China and Pakistan coordination

Mao said Beijing supports all efforts conducive to de-escalation and the resumption of dialogue.

“We stand ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Pakistan and all other relevant parties to jointly promote peace, end hostilities, and safeguard regional peace and stability,” she added.

Pakistan is maintaining active engagement with both Washington and Tehran, a key factor enabling its mediator role, Dar said.

On Monday, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said that Ishaq Dar will visit China on Tuesday at the invitation of Wang Yi.

The visit will include discussions on regional developments as well as bilateral and global issues of mutual interest, according to Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi.

Dar called on the international community to support Pakistan’s initiative.

“Pakistan will require prayers and support of the entire international community for the success of its endeavour to achieve peace and bring a permanent end to this war,” he said.
