ISLAMABAD: Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen announced on Friday that Chen Chien-jen would be the new prime minister of the country.
Announcing the important appointment in the capital Taipei, she said that the former VP Chen Chien-jen will be the head of cabinet after Su Tseng-chang’s ouster.
She voiced hope that the new PM and his cabinet will perform well for the national development as 2023 will be a critical year for the Taiwan’s development.
The move comes as part of a reshuffle in the cabinet after heavy losses for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party at local elections in 2022.
Ex-premier Su Tseng-chang submitted his resignation last week ahead of the widely-expected reorganization of the government.
New prime minister is devout Catholic
The new prime minister Chen is a devout Catholic Christian who served as Vice President (VC) during Tsai’s first tenure in office from 2016 to 2020.
