OUAGADOUGOU: Burkina Faso’s junta government Saturday asked hundreds of French forces to depart the African country within 30-day.

The announcement was made through National broadcaster RTB, citing the official Agence d’Information du Burkina. The report said that the decision had been made on Wednesday in order to end the presence of France’s troops on Burkinabe land.

Protesters took to the roads to call for the ouster of the French envoy and the closure of a French military base in the capital. Around 400 French special personnel are currently stationed there, France 24 said.

The move by Burkina Faso’s government comes five months following France completed its withdrawal from Mali after 9-year fighting extremists alongside regional forces.

The announcement was welcomed by those who had lost patience with Paris. Prominent civil society activist Passamde Sawadogo said that despite their presence on Burkinabe with huge equipment and their power, the France couldn’t help them defeat terrorism. The activist added that it therefore was time for them to get rid of them.
