LONDON: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has dismissed statements by Israel’s ambassador in London that Tel Aviv does not want a two-state solution to the conflict with the Palestinians, Western media reported on Thursday.
Tzipi Hotovely told Sky News said Israel would not pursue a two-state scenario after military operations in the Gaza Strip ends.
Sunak said British government doesn’t agree with the stance of Hotovely. He added UK has always backed a two-state solution and believes that it is the right outcome. He expressed concerned over the suffering of civilians in Gaza as a result of Israel’s military operations.
He said too many innocent people have lost their lives in Gaza adding no one wants this war to continue.
Sunak added that he told Israeli prime minister last week that every available precaution should be taken to protect innocent civilian lives.
UK making efforts to facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza
The British PM went on to say the UK is doing a lot of effort to facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
He added that he backs a sustainable ceasefire but it would remain conditional on Hamas releasing all of the captives it took on October 7.
According to health authorities in Gaza at least 18,608 Palestinians have been killed and 50,594 wounded in the Israeli strikes since then.
The Israeli raids have almost destroyed entire neighborhoods in northern Gaza. Israeli ground troops have been facing heavy resistance from Hamas fighters in the area.
According to the UN some 1.87 million Palestinians, over 80 percent of Gaza’s population, have left their homes.
