ISLAMABAD: Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has said that the government has intensified a mop-up operation on Thursday after the weekend ransacking of public buildings in the capital Brasilia, likely ransacked with inside support.
The president said that he had ordered a complete review of presidential palace staff after the violent uprising on Sunday, which saw supporters of his far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro storm the palace, Supreme Court and Congress, causing widespread damage.
Brazilian Rioters likely had backing from inside
Lula said that he was convinced that the presidential palace door was opened for people to enter because there were no broken doors. It supposed that someone facilitated their entry, the president added who pointed the finger at conniving agents from armed forces and police.
He further said that no mercy would be shown from now, and any radical “Bolsonarista” found still working for the government would be dealt with full force.
Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch urged the government to thoroughly investigate all those who have financed, incited or committed acts of violence in an attempt to negate election results.
Pro-Bolosonaro rioters who still him
Pro-Bolsonaro rioters, who still support him, vandalized government offices on Sunday, damaging works of art and leleavingraffiti messages calling for a military coup.
Investigations were underway into security lapses and to identify the masterminds and financiers of the riots.
The office of the attorney general announced on Thursday that 52 individuals had been identified and seven companies are suspected of having helped finance the uprising.
The national broadcaster TV Globo reported that the suspects included leaders in the pro-Bolosonaro agro-business sector.
These businesses were thought to have paid for the transport and food of rioters who arrived in the capital from several regions in about 100 buses. –AFP/APP
