WASHINGTON: The US president Joe Biden has issued a statement on Iran’s retaliatory strikes against Israel, saying he denounces the attack.
According to media reports, he issued the statement after speaking on the telephone with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. Biden added that while there were no strikes on US troops or facilities on Saturday, saying that they will remain vigilant to all possible threats. Reuters reported that Biden also cut short a weekend tour to his hometown and returned to Washington to hold meeting with cabinet members after the new development in the region.
In a statement via social media, Joe Biden said that he just held a meeting with his team for an update “on Iran’s strikes against Israel.
Tehran on Saturday fired dozens of drones at Israel, a strike that may trigger an escalation between the regional rivals. Earlier, Iran had pledged to retaliate for Israel’s strike on Iran’s embassy last week in Damascus, Syria that killed a senior general in the Iran and six other officers.
In a statement, the White House stated that President Biden was being briefed regular basis on new developments in the region. Reuters citied three US officials as saying that the US military also shot down Iranian drones headed toward Israel.
On the other hand, thousands of people took to the streets and roads of Iran early Sunday in a show of support for drone strikes against Israel. On Sunday, protest demonstrators waved Palestinian and Iranian flags along with banners and posters.
Meanwhile, the UNSC will hold an emergency session on Sunday after the new development in the region. A spokesperson for Malta, which holds the rotating presidency for the current month, told the media that the UNSC meeting will be held at 4:00 pm.
