WASHINGTON: In his annual State of the Union address, US President Joe Biden called for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Biden emphasized the need to prioritize humanitarian assistance and save innocent lives, warning Israel against using aid as a bargaining chip.
He announced plans to establish a temporary pier in the Mediterranean to facilitate the delivery of aid into Gaza, where the United Nations has warned of a looming famine.
While affirming Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas attacks, Biden described the situation in Gaza as “heartbreaking” and stressed the urgency of ending the conflict.
He proposed a six-week ceasefire to facilitate the release of hostages held by Hamas and address the humanitarian crisis. Additionally, Biden reiterated his support for a two-state solution, advocating for the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
Biden’s remarks reflect ongoing efforts by the United States to broker a ceasefire and address the root causes of the conflict. Despite his strong support for Israel, Biden’s call for an immediate cessation of hostilities underscores the humanitarian imperative of ending the violence in Gaza. The proposed ceasefire offers a pathway to alleviate suffering, restore stability, and advance prospects for a lasting peace in the region.
