WASHINGTON: At the annual Gridiron Club dinner in Washington, US President Joe Biden mixed light-hearted humor with serious critiques of his political rival, Donald Trump, and the state of democracy in the United States.

Biden, aged 81, joked about his own age and mental fitness, quipping that “One candidate’s too old and mentally unfit to be president. The other guy’s me.”

Addressing concerns about his age and trailing poll numbers, Biden highlighted Trump’s verbal slip-ups as he navigates the campaign trail. The event marked Biden’s first speech as president at the prestigious white-tie gala, attended by the US media and political elite.

Taking aim at Republicans in Congress over the impeachment inquiry into his son’s business dealings, Biden criticized their priorities, remarking that they would “rather fail at impeachment than succeed at anything else.” He also humorously referenced Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar’s request for another Guinness after observing Congress.

However, Biden’s focus returned to Trump, emphasizing the Democrats’ commitment to rebuilding the economy post-Covid without resorting to dangerous suggestions, such as injecting bleach, as Trump had infamously proposed during his presidency.

Amidst playful jabs, Biden turned serious, highlighting the threats to democracy, including Russian aggression in Europe and Trump’s false claims about the 2020 election. He expressed solidarity with Estonia’s Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and reaffirmed his commitment to defending democracy against external and internal threats.

Biden also defended journalists, whom Trump had frequently attacked, declaring them as pillars of a free society. He denounced the Capitol assault by pro-Trump rioters on January 6, 2021, as evidence of “poison coursing through the veins of our democracy.”

Contrasting with Trump’s past appearances at the Gridiron Club, where he engaged in playful banter with the press corps, Biden’s speech struck a balance between humor and gravity, reflecting the challenges facing the nation.

The Gridiron dinner, known for its blend of humor and tradition, provides an opportunity for Washington’s elite to come together and reflect on the state of politics and society, albeit behind closed doors.
