ISLAMABAD: “Avatar: The Way of Water” — a 2022 American epic science fiction film directed and produced by James Cameron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa — showed no sign of relinquishing its box office domination.
An industry watcher, Exhibitor Relations, said on Sunday that it took in an estimated $19.7 million in North America during its sixth weekend.
The sci-fi epic by James Cameron thus sailed past the $2 billion mark worldwide, the highest in the pandemic time, with accumulated ticket sales of $1.42 billion internationally and $598 million domestically.
It is still $1.5 billion behind all-time best seller, the original “Avatar
That makes the Disney/20th-century film the sixth movie to surpass the $2 billion mark (not adjusted for inflation). However, it is still $1.5 billion behind the all-time best-seller, the original “Avatar.”
Universal’s family-friendly “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” placed second with $11.5 million from Friday through Sunday, demonstrating significant vigor after five weeks away.
“M3GAN,” a $9.8 million scary-doll thriller from Universal and Blumhouse Productions, fell one position. The doll in the movie’s title, made to accompany a young orphan, gradually develops a spooky personality of her own.
“Missing,” a brand-new Sony movie, came in at number four with $9.3 million. Nia Long plays the mother of Storm Reid’s character, a teenager who is frantic to find her mother after she vanishes while on vacation in Colombia. That start was “outstanding” for a crime thriller, according to Franchise Entertainment Research’s David A. Gross, who also noted that “the reviews are excellent.”
Sony’s uplifting film “A Man Called Otto,” which earned $9 million, came in fifth place, down one spot from the previous weekend. Based on the well-known Swedish classic “A Man Called Ove,” Tom Hanks portrays the title curmudgeon.
Rounding out the top 10 were:
“Plane” ($5.3 million)
“House Party” ($1.8 million)
“That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” ($1.5 million)
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” ($1.4 million)
“The Whale” ($1.3 million)
