NEW DELHI: Indian music legend A. R. Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have officially separated after nearly three decades of marriage earlier this month.

The couple, who married in 1995, confirmed the split in a joint statement released by their lawyer, Vandana Shah, citing “significant emotional strain” as the primary reason for their decision.

The statement emphasised that despite their deep affection for one another, the relationship had been strained to a point where reconciliation was no longer viable.

In a recent interview, Shah, however, addressed the ongoing concerns surrounding the divorce, reconciliation and custody of children.

She said that the children- daughters Khatija and Raheema, and son Ameen- custody decision is still pending, though she said that the children, some of whom are adults, have the autonomy to choose their preferred living arrangements.

When questioned about the possibility of financial support, Shah defended Saira Banu, stating that she is not a “money-minded” person, pointing to her low-profile public life over the years.

The lawyer also left the door open for a possible reconciliation, expressing her optimism for the future.

“I have not said that reconciliation is not possible. I’m an eternal optimist, and I always talk about love and romance,” she said.

Shah acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but suggested that, while the couple’s separation was a well-thought-out decision, there was still room for healing.

The announcement has shocked fans, many of whom admired the couple for their enduring love and private life.
