ISLAMABAD: Australia faces yet another setback ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, as their pace bowling linchpin, Mitchell Starc, has decided to withdraw from the tournament for personal reasons. His absence robs the team of invaluable fast-bowling expertise, casting a shadow over their preparations.
Adding to the woes, captain Pat Cummins and fellow pacer Josh Hazlewood have already been side-lined due to injuries to their ankle and hip, respectively.
In light of Cummins’ absence, Steve Smith is set to take the helm for the prestigious tournament. The squad has been bolstered with the inclusion of five fresh faces: Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Spencer Johnson, and Tanveer Sangha.
Privacy request
Starc, who has requested privacy regarding his decision, had been visibly uncomfortable during the latter stages of the second Test in Galle.
“We fully support and respect Mitch’s choice,” stated George Bailey, chair of selectors. “Mitch is immensely respected for his dedication to international cricket and his unwavering commitment to representing Australia.”
