ISLAMABAD: An ancient palace has been discovered in Iraq with the help of a British Museum project, Arab media reported on Friday.

According to media reports, the 4,500-year-old palace, dubbed the “lost palace,” is located in Tello area of Iraq. The palace once hosted the ancient Sumerian city of Girsu.
The project of British Museum was initiated in response to Daesh’s destruction of ancient sites and artefacts in the region.
Shrine to Sumerian deity Ningirsu also discovered
During the search, researchers also discovered a shrine to the ancient Sumerian deity Ningirsu. Hartwig Fischer director of the British Museum said that the discovery will enhance their knowledge about the Sumerian civilization.
The old palace was explored during excavations in 2022 that also discovered over 200 stone tablets.
Researchers said that the historical site had suffered a huge damage during the last 200 years.
Administrative records were also explored and subsequently taken to Baghdad’s Museum, along with tablets.
Experts said that Girsu is one of the most significant heritage sites around the world yet “little is known about it.
