ISLAMABAD: American football star Damar Hamlin is in critical condition amid an injury after he collapsed during a primetime US National Football League (NFL) game.
The 24-year-old, who plays as a safety for the Buffalo Bills, fell to the ground following a collision with a player of the opposing team in the first quarter of a match against the Cincinnati Bengals.
He was taken to a local hospital after on-field medical attention of about half an hour, AFP reported.
The game was suspended by NFL about an hour after the incident.
Football star’s vitals back to normal: representative
Hamlin’s representative, Jordon Rooney wrote on Twitter that his vitals were back to a normal state and he had been put to sleep to place a breathing tube down his throat. Tests are being conducted and “We will provide updates as we have them,” he added.
Hamlin was tackling the Bengals’ receiver Tee Higgins when he got hit in the chest by Higgin’s helmet. After initially getting to his feet after the collision, he fell on his back.
Hamlin was given CPR on the field for over 10 minutes before leaving on a stretcher, ESPN said.
Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals are among the top Super Bowl teams this year, with their head-to-head scheduled at the primetime Monday night slot in the penultimate week of the NFL’s regular season.
