ADDIS ABABA: African Union Commission head Moussa Faki Mahamat said on Sunday that the Union would organize a national reconciliation conference on Libya to restore stability in the war hit country.
African Union to hold conference on Libya
The African Union Commission Chief told AFP that they have held meetings with the different parties and they are in the process of working with them to fix a date and venue for national conference. He said that the meeting will be presided over by Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso.
Libya inclined into a decade of violence and conflict after the 2011 overthrow of Moamer Kadhafi in a NATO-backed uprising.
Earlier in February, the UN had announced that senior members from the rival administrations in Libya had endorsed a mechanism to clear the African country of foreign forces and mercenaries.
The United Nations mission in Libya lauded “an important measures toward achieving sustainable peace and stability in Libya” after a meeting in Egypt, Cairo on February 8 along with officials from Niger and Sudan.
The United Nations estimated in late 2021 that there were over 20,000 foreign fighters in the African country.
