ISLAMABAD: Fighting broke out between the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) and Taliban forces in Kamdesh district of Afghanistan’s northeastern Nuristan province on Saturday, with the resistance group claiming it captured several Taliban checkpoints during a counter-attack.
The Afghanistan Freedom Front said fighting began early Saturday after Taliban fighters attacked its positions with drones in parts of Kamdesh district.
The Front said its fighters targeted several Taliban drones before launching a counter-attack, during which it claimed to have captured several Taliban checkpoints.
The AFF also said Taliban fighters withdrew from the Arandu area and parts of Kamdesh district towards Nari district in neighbouring Kunar province.

Afghanistan resident’s account
A resident of Kamdesh separately reported hearing fighting in the area.
A Taliban-linked media outlet, HIJAZ Persian, also reported clashes in Kamdesh but did not identify the armed group involved. It said an alleged plot in the district had been foiled.
The outlet reported that dozens of people had been killed, wounded or detained during the fighting, without providing details supporting the figures.
The Taliban has not officially commented on the reported clashes.
The AFF is an armed opposition group that has carried out attacks against Taliban forces since the Taliban returned to power in Kabul in August 2021. Its reported activities have mainly been concentrated in northern and northeastern parts of the country.

Nuristan is a mountainous province in northeastern Afghanistan bordering Pakistan. Kamdesh district lies close to Kunar province, where armed groups have also operated.
The latest fighting highlights continuing security challenges in parts of the war-torn country more than five years after the Taliban seized power following the withdrawal of US and allied forces.
