BERLIN: A German magazine Der Spiegel has reported that the Afghan Taliban has freed 28 Afghan nationals who were deported from Germany.
According to the report, the persons were freed after making commitments to the Taliban. This is the first time in three years that Germany has deported Afghan refugees via chartered flight back to Afghanistan.
Der Spiegel added that the 28 individuals, who had been convicted of serious crimes, including rape, were imprisoned upon their arrival to Afghanistan. However, they were later released.
Suhail Shaheen, head of the Taliban’s political office in Doha, told Der Spiegel that the individuals were investigated and then freed after their families provided written assurances that they would not commit any further crimes.
The deportation of refugees to Afghanistan has drawn wide criticism from human rights organizations. Human Rights Watch has denounced Germany’s decision, accusing it of ignoring the critical situation in Afghanistan while continuing with the deportations.
