ISLAMABAD/KABUL: Afghan Taliban have appointed councils of clerics in various provinces, including Ghazni, Nangarhar and Badakhshan. Under a proclamation issued by Taliban Supreme Leader Mawlawi Hibatullah Akhundzada, religious leaders will confer with provincial officials to decide upon matters, TOLO news said.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said, “The religious clerics from the council come from all provinces. There are also elders from every province. The council is formed to mediate between the people and the government.”

Formation of councils vital to address problems of local people

Political analysts believe that the formation of the councils was vital to address the problems of local people. Political analyst Bilal Fatimi said, “The formation of the council of the ulema at the provincial level is a positive initiative, but it is not a solution to all domestic problems of the people of Afghanistan.”

Political analyst Mohammad Bashar said, “This would eliminate the distance between the people and the Taliban government. The officials and rulers would come closer to the people.”  According to the Taliban, the councils of religious clerics have also been formed in Kabul, Kapisa, Paktia, Helmand, Nimroz, Farah, Faryab, Urozgan, Kunar, Paktika, Zabul, Jawzjan, Kunduz, Baghlan and Khost provinces.

The councils of clerics for the rest of the provinces would also be formed, the Taliban said.
